Week 6 Reflection: Wars on Wars

In the late 19th century the United States developed a more efficient foreign policy in result of the Spanish American War. Imperialism is one country extends control over a certain territory, political system, or economic life of another. This also comes with the establishment of other colonies. The idea of imperialism is similar to westward expansion. Once Americans had drained and used all resources out west, they decided to take to overseas to develop and obtain more natural resources.

The Spanish American war of 1898 was the first imperialist war for the unites states. Cuba wanted independence from Spain and the United States supported them which resulted in Spain declaring war on the United States. The United States won the war and gained colonies that Spain once owned such as; Guam, Puerto Rico, Philippines, and Cuba. The Unites States granted independence to Cuba. As a result of the United States winning the war, they took over the Philippines as an economic base for Asia. They also choose to colonize the colony and the Filipinos by educating and teaching Christianity.  in 1899, the Philippine-American War started because Filipinos were resisting American colonization. The united states won because of the advantage they had with their weapons. Once they won, they cut all supply with the island and the Filipinos had no allies.

World War 1 in Europe started in 1914. United States President, Woodrow Wilson continued neutrality towards Europe and stood by the policy that kept the United States from becoming involved in European affairs. Austria-Hungary later declared war on Serbia after the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. Due to the system of alliances, all of Europe was involved in the war but the United States continued to stay neutral. United States didn’t enter the war until 1917 in efforts to make the world “safe for democracy”.  The United States benefitted from the war because it created potential for great profits to American business.

African Americans and American women played key roles during World War 1. About 370,000 African American men served in the armed forces. Although they were fighting for the country, they still suffered abuse and racism during the duration of the war from the people they were fighting alongside. On a brighter note, the war provided industrial jobs for black laborers that hadn’t been available before. These jobs created the Great Migration which was a huge migration from the South to the North. American Women begin to work in defense plants and railroads. They also started fighting harder for their right to vote.

WWI ended in 1918 and left over 10 million solider and civilians dead. The United States involvement in the war kept the allies at an advantage.

  3. Hey I really liked your post! The picture you chose really illustrates what World War 1 was like, and the types of combat that was used. I like how you structured your post and made it easy to understand and absorb the information. It is bizarre that many of the men who fought were African Americans and that is not widely talked about. It was unfair how they were treated horribly when they were sacrificing their lives for this country.
